Julia Fiona Roberts was born in Atlanta on October 28 1967 and was the child of Betty Lou Bredemus and Walter Grady Roberts. She is an extended family of Robertses, the 4th generation that live in the Atlanta area, starting with her great-grandfather John Pendleton Roberts a farmer. In the early years, her father began to take an interest in theater. When he was a student at Emory University in 1952 he acted in productions on campus as well as in other parts of Atlanta. He joined the air force in the year 1953. While stationed in Biloxi Mississippi, he was cast in the military's production, which featured Betty Lou Bredemus who was an air force member as well. In 1955, the couple married and, in 1956, their son Eric Anthony was born. Walter was enrolled in Tulane University, New Orleans Louisiana. In 1957, the couple left the airforce and Walter began his studies at Tulane University. In 1960, the family relocated from Louisiana to Decatur Georgia where Walter began working with Atlanta's Academy Theater and the Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio. Walter along with Betty Lou produced a Saturday early morning television program for children known as Bum Bum and His Buddies in 1964, and they were paid. They established an Actors and Writers Workshop in the year 1964, and it took six years to complete. They welcomed in 1965 two children to the family: Lelisa Billingsley along with Julia Billingsley.
